United States Olympic Hockey Team Calls on Ray Shero and Dan Bylsma

By MF, The Pens Hockey Show

The Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero has been named as Associate General Manager of the United States Olympic hockey team, along with Penguins’ coach Dan Bylsma being named as the team’s head coach.

Pittsburgh will be represented at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, not just on the ice, but behind the bench, and from up in the boxes.

Ray Shero will be serving behind David Poile, the General Manger for the Nashville Predators, as he is expected to be named the team’s general manager.

Poile and Shero are not strangers, since Shero served with the Predators for eight years, under Poile.
The official announcements have not been made, but will happen in New York on Saturday.

Congratulations to both Ray Shero and Dan Blysma. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work and should make the United States proud. The gold medal is starting to look promising for the United States.

Three-Year Contract Extension for Chris Kunitz

By: MF, The Pens Hockey Show

On Thursday, July 27th, it was announced by the Penguins general manager, Ray Shero, that Chris Kunitz and the Penguins have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension.
The contract has an average annual value of $3.85 million and will start next season and run through until the 2016-17 season.

This past season was one of his best seasons, as he lead the team in goals (22) and power-play goals (t-9).
He didn’t stop there, coming up second on the team in points (52), game-winning goals (t-5), and a plus-minus rating of +30. It was his second straight season topping the 50-point mark (fifth time in his career) and became the sixth time he has recorded 20 goals.

Kunitz has come to be known as part of the top-line for the Penguins, playing on the wing to center Sidney Crosby. Many contribute his success to playing on a line with such a dynamic player as Crosby. This can be true on some occasions, but Kunitz has been productive with Crosby in and out of the lineup.

Kunitz has become a big contributor on the Penguins. I have to say, Shero did some great deal making, as it looks like he got Kunitz at a steal of a price. I think it shows just how much Kuntiz wants to stay in Pittsburgh, and that he loves playing for the Penguins.

Evgeni Malkin to Stay in Pittsburgh as a Penguin

By: MF, The Pens Hockey Show

On Thursday, June 13th, 2013 the Penguins and Evgeni Malkin have agreed to a new eight-year contract extension that is worth $76 million and is a cap hit of $9.5 million per year.
Malkin still has a year left on his current contract and this new contract extension will take effect in the 2014-15 season, running through to the 2021-22 season.

Malkin was happy to have this deal done, keeping him in Pittsburgh. It’s no secret that Malkin has loved Pittsburgh from the moment in stepped on the ice as a Penguin, which was in October of 2006.

“I think my first year when I came, I saw how people liked me and how people are happy to see me here. I remember my first game when I stepped on the ice and everyone stood up and started clapping for me. My heart pushed me so hard. It’s an unbelievable memory,” expressed Malkin.

Malkin has won many awards as a Penguin, the most prized one being the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins General Manager, Ray Shero commented on the deal with Malkin, “(Malkin) made it very clear, which I was happy to hear, that this is where he wanted to play and if we could possibly make it work, he would love to sign an extension…He certainly has, like all our players and all of us, room for improvement. But he’s 26 years old and I believe his best days could be ahead of him. So, really, really happy to have him under contract, he’s a huge part of our franchise. It’s a good day for the Penguins and Evgeni and his family. Look forward to having him back and continuing to improve upon his game on and off the ice.”

I have to say, I am very happy to hear this news. I am not shocked by any of this and knew that Malkin (Geno) would be a Penguin for life. It’s something special, when a team can draw such amazing players to its franchise. A franchise in which players fall in love with everything from the organization, teammates, coaches, owners, fans, and the city itself.

Ray Shero has a lot of hard decisions ahead of him this off-season and it’s a short one at that. It will be interesting to see what Shero does next. I would think that the Penguins would be focusing on getting Kris Letang a new contract, as he is entering his final contract year with the Penguins.

The Penguins Ink Bylsma to a Two-Year Contract Extension

By: MF, The Pens Hockey Show

The Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero announced on Wednesday, June 12th, 2013 that they have signed head coach Dan Bylsma to a two-year contract extension. This contract will take him through to the 2015-16 season. Bylsma still has one year remaining on his current contract as head coach.

In addition, assistant coaches Tony Granato and Todd Reirden were given contract extensions.

Penguins GM Ray Shero stated, “I believe in Dan Bylsma and I believe in stability with our coaching staff…Dan is one of the top coaches in the NHL. His record speaks for itself. We fell short of our goal this year, and we’re all disappointed in that, but I believe – and our ownership believes – that Dan is the man to lead us into the future.”

I have to say I agree with this move. I think Bylsma is a great coach and can lead this team to another Stanley Cup. One thing that really stands out for me is how Bylsma still holds the respect and confidence of the players. The players were quick to say they didn’t deliver in the Boston series and to support their coach, when they were questioned about his leadership and decisions.

The Penguins have had some amazing success under the coaching of Bylsma, but he has lead them through some difficult times. When most coaches would have failed with the major injuries plaguing the team, but he kept the team going.

Bylsma is a top NHL coach and his record with the Penguins speaks for itself. He will lead the Penguins to another Stanley Cup, it’s only a matter of time.

Penguins Have Their Backs to the Wall...Time to Fight Back! Game 4

The Pens are on the edge of the abyss and the Bruins are trying to push them over tonight. The Pens played a much better game in Game 3, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins won in double overtime to take a 3-0 series lead. The Pens are going to have to step their game up to an inhuman like level to extend this series and keep themselves alive in the playoffs. The Pens are going to have to get some more from everyone, including their stars Sid and Geno. The defense is going to have to been flawless and Vokoun needs to keep playing well. He was the only thing keeping the Pens alive in Game 3. The offense is going to have to keep bodies and traffic in front of Rask. They need to disrupt his play in the crease anyway they can and this should lead to some dirty goals, at this point they need it. They need to get in the Bruins, especially Rask's faces and show them they will not go quietly, they are going to fight and take this to a game 7.

The Pens lineup is as follows:

Forwards
Kuni, Sid, Duper
Cooke, Geno, Neal
Bennett, Sutter, Iginla
Morrow, Adams, TK

Defense
Orpik, Engo
Martin, Tanger
Murray, Niskanen

Vokoun in the cage!

Penguins Desperate to Right this Series! Game 3

The Pens are down 2-0 in this series, losing both their home games to Boston. After Game 2, the Pens better show up a totally different team. It was one of the worse games I have ever seen the Pens play, there aren't words to truly describe it. They did everything wrong and not one person on the team played very well (not even well). You couldn't blame anything on the goal tending, because the team in front of the net was far from our great Pens team we have seen in the past. It was a meltdown, but now it's time for the Pens to either put up or get their tee times ready. I still believe the Pens can pull themsleves out of this hole. They have all the talent in the world on their roster, a deep defense, and good goalies. Now they have to play like it and work hard. They can start by putting lots of pucks behind Rask and keeping pucks out of their net.

The Pens lineup is as follows:

Forwards
Kuni, Sid, Duper
Cooke, Geno, Neal
Bennett, Sutter, Iginla
Morrow, Vitale, Adams

Defense
Orpik, Martin
Tanger, Niskanen
Murray, Engo

Vokoun in the cage!

7:10- The Bruins kill yet another Pens PP. The Pens needed to shoot the puck more on that PP.

9:10- The Pens get another PP as Bruins get a too many men on the ice penalty.

However, the Pens are ready to bounce back in this game and tie the series up before heading off to Boston.
